What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease affects your gums. This disease develops when plaque gets left on your teeth and hardens into tartar. While you can remove plaque at home with brushing and flossing, a dental professional has to remove tartar.
Left in place, the bacteria from the plaque and tartar irritate and inflame your gums, leading to periodontal disease.
The first stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis. While this form of gum disease is very treatable and reversible, it’s important to get care right away if you notice any problems with your gums.
This prevents gingivitis from progressing into periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease. With periodontitis, the inflammation and irritation in your gums are so severe that they start to separate from your teeth, forming pockets around the base of your teeth.
This allows additional plaque and tartar buildup under your gum line. Once you have periodontitis, treatment is more invasive, and restoring your gum health is a much larger challenge.
What are the symptoms of periodontal disease?
Visit RenovaSmiles if you notice any of these periodontal disease symptoms:
- Pink, swollen gums
- Gum tenderness
- Bleeding gums
- Pain when you chew
- Loose teeth
- Bad breath
- Tooth sensitivity
- Gum recession
All of these symptoms can indicate that your gums aren’t healthy. Get proper care as quickly as possible to make it easier to reverse your periodontal disease.
How is periodontal disease treated?
It depends on the type of periodontal disease you have. Your RenovaSmiles provider customizes an oral hygiene program you can use to keep your mouth clean so your gums can heal.
If you catch your periodontal disease while it’s still gingivitis, regular teeth cleanings at RenovaSmiles and diligent at-home care — including brushing and flossing daily — are usually sufficient to keep your teeth free of plaque and tartar, so your gums can heal.
If you have periodontitis, though, you may need a treatment called scaling and root planing. During this treatment, your RenovaSmiles dentist removes plaque and tartar from under your gum line (scaling).
They then smooth the surface of the tooth’s root (root planing) to encourage the gum to reattach to the newly cleaned surface.
To ensure your comfort and deliver the best results, your RenovaSmiles dentist uses the leading-edge Biolase® laser for this minimally invasive treatment.
No matter the stage of your periodontal disease, the team at RenovaSmiles is available to help your gums heal. Get started with periodontal care by calling any of their three offices or making an appointment online today.
