This is where flossing plays an important role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flossing is the process of using a string of dental floss to remove plaque and food debris from between your teeth and along your gum line. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva that can build up on your teeth and gums. If not removed, plaque can harden into tartar, which is more difficult to remove. Bacteria in plaque can cause gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To floss your teeth efficiently, start by wrapping the end of the floss around your middle finger. Use about 18 inches of floss so that you have a good grip on it. Then, use your index finger to guide the floss between your teeth. Repeat this process with all of your teeth. Spit the floss into the sink when you&#8217;re finished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should floss at least once a day, preferably after brushing your teeth. If you eat foods that are hard to remove with brushing alone, such as popcorn kernels or sticky candy, you may need to floss more frequently.\u00a0 In addition, most people think that they should only floss when they can see visible plaque or food particles in between their teeth. However, you should actually be flossing at least once a day \u2013 preferably after every meal or before going to bed. This is because plaque can form on your teeth even if you can&#8217;t see it, and if it&#8217;s not removed, it can lead to tooth decay or gum disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three main types of dental floss are nylon multifilament, monofilament, and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene). Nylon multifilament is the most common type used. It&#8217;s made of multiple strands of nylon that are twisted together. Monofilament is made of a single strand of nylon or another synthetic material. PTFE is a synthetic polymer that&#8217;s sometimes used in place of nylon. There are also waxed and unwaxed floss, as well as flavored and non-flavored floss.
