Many people have unhealthy gums and don\u2019t even know because gum disease is often painless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gum disease<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gum disease begins when plaque builds up along your gum line. Because plaque is filled with bacteria, it can be responsible for gum infections which can then lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Although it can be difficult to catch gum disease, here are some warning signs that may alert you to having it:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your gums are inflamed or swollen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your gums are red and tender<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your gums are prone to bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have persistent bad breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are beginning to lose permanent teeth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your gums are pulling away from your teeth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gum disease is not life-threatening, though it can cause serious damage to your oral health and can even affect your overall health. Fortunately, gum disease is treatable and preventable. Here are some ways to keep your gums healthy.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Brush your teeth properly<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is probably the most common way to keep your mouth and gums healthy. When brushing, make sure to move the brush in short strokes and press gently. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and remember to replace your toothbrush once every 3 months or as soon as the bristles begin to fray.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Floss daily<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brushing is not enough, you have to floss at least once a day. Flossing will help remove the plaque and food particles trapped in between your teeth and those that are beyond the reach of your toothbrush. If plaque is not removed, these particles can lead to tartar build-up which can result in gum disease.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Regular checkup with your dentist<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular checkups will allow your dentist to monitor your dental health and detect early signs of gum disease if there are any. That way, any conditions can be treated even before they become worse.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Do not smoke. If you smoke, quit<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking can weaken your immune system and make it difficult for your body to fight off signs of infection, including gum disease.
